Renewing Your COE: The Documents and Step-by-Step Process
Everything you need to prepare before renewing your COE on LTA OneMotoring — from checking your PQP to the exact steps and renewal deadlines.
If you've decided renewal is the right call for your car, the process itself is administrative rather than complicated. Here's exactly what to prepare and the order to do it in.
Before you start
- Check your vehicle's current PQP for its category on OneMotoring — this is refreshed monthly and is the figure your renewal cost is based on.
- Decide between a 5-year renewal (50% of PQP, one-time only, car must be deregistered when this period ends) and a 10-year renewal (full PQP, can be renewed again indefinitely).
- Clear any outstanding road tax, ERP charges or summonses — LTA will not process a renewal while these are outstanding.
- If you plan to finance the renewal (a COE renewal loan), arrange this with your bank ahead of time so funds are ready when you submit.
Step-by-step on OneMotoring
- Log in to onemotoring.lta.gov.sg with SingPass.
- Select your vehicle and choose the COE renewal option.
- Confirm the renewal period (5 or 10 years) — this determines whether you pay 50% or 100% of the PQP.
- Review the PQP amount payable, which is locked in at submission.
- Make payment. Once processed, your vehicle's COE record is updated immediately and no further physical paperwork or inspection is required for the renewal itself.
Timing matters
Renew before your existing COE expires. There is a one-month grace period after expiry during which you can still renew, but LTA charges a late fee of S$50 per day for every day the vehicle remains unrenewed during that window — so it is worth diarising your COE expiry date well in advance rather than waiting until the last week.
A note on category E vehicles
If your vehicle's COE was originally obtained under the open Category E, renewal must be done under the vehicle's corresponding category (A to D) rather than under Category E itself, since Category E has no PQP of its own.
Before you commit the payment
Because renewing permanently forfeits your PARF rebate for this vehicle, it's worth taking two minutes to check what your car could fetch on the open market first. You can submit your car for a free, no-obligation valuation from independent dealer bids on CarBidGo — if the numbers favour renewal, you've lost nothing but two minutes; if they don't, you've just avoided locking yourself into another 5 or 10 years on a car that was worth more to sell.
